Stuck

Last year I did the New Things 2015 Challenge, and I was very successful! Unfortunately, this year has not started as auspiciously! I wanted to have at least one query letter sent by the end of February, but here we are in March, and that hasn't happened yet. I also wanted to take advantage of a website called Chanillo, which allows writers to post serially for subscribers to read, and that hasn't happened, either.

I could blame it on my health, but really it is just a lack of get-up-and-go! I can't even say it is necessarily fear at this point. Well, maybe the query letter, but there is nothing to fear from Chanillo; it's simply going to require work on my part.

What do you do when you're stuck? How do you overcome the lack of motivation?

Writer's Digest is a helpful journal for anyone who wants to write, and their website is filled with tips, links, and articles to help all of us -- the Rookie as well as the Star. In a post from 2012, the website offers an excerpt from Aine Greaney's book Writer with a Day Job. I didn't find all of the tips helpful for me, but it does encourage me to write daily, even badly, and to create a space where I feel comfortable and inspired.

Another blogger, Ollin Morales of Courage2Create, also writes that when we try to motivate ourselves by saying, "I'll do it to prove them all wrong!" (Them being the people who said I never would), that we do ourselves a disservice. I agree. There are two problems with this particular motivational strategy, as I see it: (1) most of my family and friends have always been supportive, and (2) I am my own worst enemy when it comes to writing! However, Morales also suggests rewarding yourself for a successful day. That's motivation I can get behind!

So this month's goal will be to set up an area of my apartment away from distraction and comfortable and pretty, where I will want to sit and write on a regualr basis (even if not daily), and to find a reward! That shouldn't be too difficult! ;)
