Do You Doubt the Validity of Christ's Message?

This week my church began a new series that I think will resonate with many people. Over the course of several weeks, the pastors will speak to the areas that cause us -- and the world in which we live -- to doubt the existence of God and the validity of Christ's message. They'll address the argument that God isn't necessary because science can explain everything, the belief that we can all find our own truth, and questions about life after death.

But this first message replies to the popular argument that Christ cannot be followed because His followers can't be trusted.
Pastor Mark Stuenzi wants us to remember three things when we are confronted by people who doubt the validity of Christ's message.
1. Don't be distracted. Don't judge the truth of the message by the lives of the messengers.
Let's face it. We are fallen people. We make mistakes. We don't live up too our own standards. But the heart of God remains true. As Mark said, "Christians will disappoint you. Christ never will."
2. Don't be surprised. The most broken and messed up people will be the ones most drawn to Christ.
When we realize our own brokenness, we are drawn to the forgiveness and mercy of Christ. These broken people make up the Church. As time goes by, we become more like Christ, but it is a lifelong journey, not a worm hole that takes us there instantly. Don't be surprised if these broken and imperfect people act and react in ways that are insecure or selfish or unkind. That doesn't make us hypocrites, if we acknowledge our own brokenness. As Christians, we need to live a life of authenticity.
3. Don't be deceived. Although we must admit that some Christians have perpetrated evil over the years in the name of Christ, an honest look at history shows that Christianity has made a wonderful impact on our world.
Mark listed a few organizations that were founded by Christians to help and spread the Gospel. You've heard of the YMCA, the Red Cross, and the Salvation Army. What about the unnamed physicians and untrained nurses who have always served in plagues and war zones? What about the millions of people who have the basic human rights that we in America take for granted, because of the ideals set forth in the Bible? Even the right of every American child to free education was based first on the Protestant Church's desire to have everyone read the Bible on their own.
Doubts do not have to derail your faith. And when your circle of friends and family ask you why you believe, follow Peter's words in 1 Peter 3: ".... Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect..." - 1 Peter 3:15
